The (Crayon) Writing is on the Wall

Writers's workshop

For this week’s Writers Workshop from Mama Kat I chose prompt # 3.) Oops. Write about a time your kids were yelled at for something they didn’t do.  (inspired by this tweet from Big Mama Cass, “After scolding Monk for saying “Dammit” he brings me a diamond shaped puzzle piece and says “dammit mommy?” He was saying Diamond. I’m awesome.”)

When #1 was 2 ½ and #2 was barely a year old we moved into our first brand new custom built home.  To say it was a proud moment for us definitely does not do the moment justice.  Hubby’s brother had just gotten married the month before and had flown their mom in from Japan for the wedding.  Since it was so expensive for her to fly here they decided that after the wedding she would come and visit us for a month. Yes, I had my mother in law with us for a month. But, to her credit, she was a god send in helping with the move.

At BIL's Wedding a couple weeks before move-in

We were one of the first families to move in on our street so there was still a LOT of construction going on all day long.  It was early May and we hadn’t turned on the air so the sounds of hammering and construction was a constant in those days.

The day after we moved in our brand new house, I was putting curtains up in #1’s bedroom.  The phone rang and I set the hammer down and went into the kitchen to answer the phone.  It was hubby who I hadn’t talked to all day so we were chit chatting about his day and my day when I kinda sorta in the background hear this little “tap tap tap” pause “tap tap tap” pause.  This goes on for a while when through the fog and haze of exhaustion from the moving it dawns on me that the noise is coming from #2’s room.

#1 w/ Grandma the day she flew back to Japan

I quickly told hubby I had to get off the phone and went running into #1’s room to find her tap tap tapping away the plaster on the brand new window sills ALL the way down to the metal. I yelled at her to stop and she turned to me with her BIG brown perfectly oval eyes and said “Help?  I help mommy?”  Now how could I be mad at THAT?  She WAS just trying to help… she just didn’t know HOW.  Now yes, this instance WAS a warranted yelling at but I tell you THIS instance so that you can understand where I’m coming from on the NEXT one.

About a year or so later I’m walking down the hallway and notice crayon marks all over the hall wall.  I don’t know if you’ve ever tried to get crayon marks off a wall but it seems like nothing short of sanding, painting over or wall papering is gonna cover up crayon marks.

I immediately call for #1 and bring her out into the hallway and start fussing at her for the crayon marks on the wall.  She immediately tears up and tells me “It was #2. She did it. She was drawing on the wall.”  So I go in and get #2 who is about 2 or 2 ½  by now and I take her into the hallway and point out the crayon marks and tell her writing on the walls is a no no and really fuss her out good and just to make sure the impression is lasting I spank her little bottom (not hard, get over it) and then tell her as punishment she is going to have to help mommy clean up the mess.

About the age of the writing on the wall incident

We go and get a pail and some pine sol or some kind of cleaner (no magic erasers way back then) and I usher her back into the hallway to “help her” since she is so little I have to show her the right way and I want to make sure it makes enough of an impression that she is NOT going to do it again!  I take her little hand and put the sponge in it and dunk her little hand in the warm sudsy water and bring her over to the crayon marks so we can scrub it off together and WTF???? Her little hand won’t even reach up HIGH enough to reach the marks!  Hmmmnnnnn

Yes, I yelled at this cute little face and spanked her cute little butt... terrible mommy!

Yes, I felt like a jerk because not only had #2 NOT made the marks on the wall but she had gotten a spanking for it when she didn’t even do it.  Which meant that #1 had not only DONE IT… she LIED about it and WATCHED me while I spanked #2 and tried to make her clean it up.  But you better believe when she realized that I KNEW she did it she turned on the water works again.

Could these two little innocent faces ever do anything wrong?

And I should ever wonder why #2 had middle child syndrome?  Bless her heart…. I spank her when it’s not warranted, then I forget her getting honored at the board of education years later and after that I forget and leave her at the mall!  Man, I do have some BAD MOMMY moments, don’t I?  Should I be let out of the house unsupervised?

Despite my terrible parenting skills #2 still turned out great, huh?

#2’s eyes in her baby pic are just tooooo adorable. We had a crayon moment too, but it was very obvious that #1 did it as the evidence was still in her hand. Despite her chocolate brown eyes, she did get a spanked little butt. And, I must confess, I forgot to pick up our #2 after school in 6th grade once so I guess I can share some bad mommy moments with you.

My beautiful precious little Sabu, how could you?! I swear those little apple cheek of hers always got me and her sweet little quiet demeanor…awe. So did #1 get a spanking after that? Years later I find out a lot of the times my oldest got in trouble for hurting the youngest were lies…he purposely got him in trouble!

    • pegbur7 says:

Oh, yes… #1 got her spanking (in spades) but she was always a little manipulator in she knew (and still does) how to turn on the charm to get what she wants. The other two think that sort of thing is beneath them. LOL

  3. Paige says:

#2 did turn out beautiful. That picture of her at two – so precious!

  4. Stephanie says:

They all get over and most forget our bad mommy moments. I had six kids and I am sure there were plenty of times the wrong kid got in trouble.

  5. KLZ says:

    Over from Mama Kat’s.

As I stated earlier this week, you should tell people what you did before they find out because you always end up caught….and in way more trouble than if you’d just fessed up. Which I had to learn the hard way a few times.

    • pegbur7 says:

Exactly! But their train of thought is usually that it’s easier to ask forgiveness than permission. I prefer to just TELL ME… 🙂 Thanks for stopping by!

  6. Lo says:

Stopping by from Mama Kat’s. Thanks for reading my post. I can totally relate to your post, except it’s always #2 blaming #1! 🙂 Lo

  7. Ron says:

Oh, heavens…#1 sounded just like me as a kid. I was forever doing things and then blaming it on my brother.

I was Patty Mc Cormack as the Bad Seed!

    HAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!

Your daughters were absolutely adorable as kids, and are beautiful as adults. LOVE their dark, sweet eyes.

I can tell from all that you share about your children on this blog – they love you and you love them!

Have a great day, dear friend!

    X

    • pegbur7 says:

Thanks Ron. Yes, despite all the chaos and bad mommy moments I think they do still love me in spite of all my flaws and bad mommy moments! And those dark sweet eyes come from Grandma and Daddy… Guess you can’t really see Grandma’s eyes in the picture but she has the same dark sweet eyes!

It’s always a pleasure to see you comment on my silly shenanigans! You have a wonderful day too!

  8. Wow. Your kids are beautiful.

My sister and I loved coloring the walls and blaming each other for it. Poor mom could never keep up with who did what.

    Stopping by from Mama Kat’s.

    • pegbur7 says:

Thanks, yes I think all three of them are beautiful (even though I don’t have a pic of #3 on this post) but I am a little biased in my opinion! LOL

Don’t we all just love blaming someone else? So much easier (or less punishing?) to say someone else did it!

  9. Hadassah says:

    Yes, she turned out beautifully.

Don’t be so hard on yourself…the mommy business is hard stuff…or so I heard!

  10. Erin says:

Mommy moments are great aren’t they? Your daughter is beautiful….and don’t worry they will have plenty of mommy moments of their own!!

  11. Those photos are so adorable! What a couple of cuties! Spanking that little butt! For no reason! Ha ha ha ha ha! Girl, we’ve all done it!

  12. Stef says:

Those rascally kids. Always sicking us on the other. THeir time will come and then they will realize who REALLY was scarred from those experiences. US!

  13. Get out of the city! You gave the wrong one a spanking : ) That is so funny. I have never left my kid at the mall but I am pretty sure that is only because he is the only one I have : )

    • pegbur7 says:

She said it wouldn’t have been so bad if she was a “little” kid but she could drive and STILL got left at the mall by her parents! Bless her heart. Good thing she has a good sense of humor! LOL Thanks for stopping by!

  14. Spot says:

Your daughters were amazingly cute. I don’t know how you ever got mad at them. And they have grown into beautiful girls, so you must have done alright. Poor Sean got into trouble for sticking a golf tee into a phone jack when he was little. Just two years ago, (roughly eight years after the incident) Lu confessed that she had actually done it and blamed him. Sometimes, we all fall prey to their little deceits. Lol.

  15. Jenners says:

Awww…#2 sounds likes a spitfire … and she is beautiful both big and small!!! Nothing like framing your younger sister for your misdeeds and letting her take the fall!

    Thanks for the visit earlier!

    • pegbur7 says:

Thank YOU for the reciprocal visit! Yeah, I guess we’ve all done that a time or two I just felt really bad afterwards. Poor mistreated little booger!

  16. D’awwww, poor #2! Although I sort of admire #1 for managing to strategically get out of the situation smartly! 😛

  17. Natalie says:

My kids are too little for this yet, but now I know what I have to look forward to! I’m sure in a year or so I’ll have a mom story like this…and I’m sure it won’t be the only one 🙂
Beautiful girls! Both young and grown up!

  18. Jimmy says:

I think we all go through this one Peg, Crayons, permanant markers, nail polish have tried to clean up and cover them all while the kids are pointing at each other, not easy to find the guilty one when none are owning up to it but pointing the other way.

Beautiful Girls you have there looks like you did a good job raising them.

  19. Teri Smieja says:

As parent’s no one is perfect, and we all make mistakes. I think it’s important to be able to admit it, and apologize. I never understood parents who’ve refused to do that??

I have to say, your daughters were absolutely adorable young children, and as for now..WOW! Beautiful!

  20. Mama Kat says:

    Awwww, they’re SO cute!!
