Loss, such a simple word

But can mean so many things

And a wide variety of emotions

That thing that you lost brings

You can lose weight

And change your style

But gain it all back

In just a little while

You can lose sight

Of the goals in your life

Which can bring you joy

Or bring you strife

You can lose your keys

To your house or your car

Or lose your way

And not know where you are

You can lose your mind

You can lose your head

You can lose your house

Or your furniture, your bed

You can lose loved ones

You can lose hope

You can lose your fortune

Feel like you can’t cope

Loss is a funny fickle word

It can make you happy or sad

It can bring you much joy

Or make you feel bad

Some losses are gains

Some are battles begun

Like when losing weight

It’s a victory won

You can lose your temper

Or the shirt off your back

Sometimes it takes loss

To get your life back on track

Sometimes loss feels different

Like an accessory you wear

Like a choker on your neck

That cuts off your air

It threatens to overtake you

You feel you can’t breathe

It sucks you under

It won’t take its leave

You wear it like a shawl

Loosely around your arms

But then it envelopes you

Can cause you real harm

Your try to swim for the surface

To breathe in fresh air

But the loss overwhelms you

And pulls you down to its lair

You try to forget it

Not think of it for a while

Then it sneaks back up on you

And anxiety piles

Sometimes it stifles you

Or stops you dead in your tracks

And slowly things start to seem normal

You take your life back

You stand taller

But you don’t forget

Life is full of losses

You can’t regret

You take them one day at a time

Put one foot in front of the other

Put a smile on your face

And be kind to one another

We all face losses

We all face fear

Just do the best you can

And keep your hope near
