Real Men (And Women) DO Eat Quiche

Today was a great day. I had planned on going to VA last week and due to the dental procedure stayed here and then #2 said she was coming out Friday but didn’t get off work in time and #3 had said she was coming out today so I told #2 to come out too. She requested brunch instead of the full out heavy lunches that hubby is famous for. So I told hubby that I’d do the cooking. Get the look of horror off your face…. I can cook….sometimes.

Anyway, I started thinking Friday about what I wanted to cook for today. Something different than my usual bacon and eggs and biscuits. So I decided I wanted to see if I could make a Frittata. I’ve never even eaten frittata but it sounds good so I searched online for recipes and yesterday we got our Southern Living and guess what dish it featured in there this month? FRITTATAS! Frittatas for Any Occasion to be precise.

So I took the liberty of combining one I found in that article with one I found online. You know, I can’t ever do anything precisely by directions so I have to put my own little spin on it. Plus I’m just a little too A D D to follow directions exactly but I get the general gist of it.

Basically I took a recipe for Smoked Ham, Gruyere and Caramelized Onion Frittata and added a little here and took a little away there and I think I did a pretty tasty jam-up job. The girls seemed to enjoy it and Hubby said it was great so I guess I passed. As Hubby likes to say ‘You know you’re good when you impress yourself.” I do not consider myself a “good cook” but I did impress myself today. Here is a picture of my frittata:

My first attempt at a frittata

I also made a quiche. Again my own spin on a classic quiche. I guess it would be closest to a Quiche Lorraine but that hussface Lorraine likes Swiss cheese and Peg does not so I use whatever cheese I have handy. My Quiche Peg today had a little cheddar, a little mozzarella and I think some Mexican Mix from Kraft that I had in the fridge. And since I was caramelizing the onions for the frittata I added enough in there for the quiche along with some mushrooms so it had sautéed onions and mushrooms along with the bacon. It was N U M M Y. I love quiche.

Here is my quiche:

I added some fresh fruit and biscuits to the table to round out the brunch. Of course, hubby just couldn’t NOT cook anything. He had gotten some fresh butterbeans from the farmers at the Farmers Market yesterday so he just had to cook them. Since they didn’t exactly go with the quiche and frittata he made greens to go with them and then decided to make beef patties and gravy in case #3’s boyfriend came because hubby surmised that he might not like quiche and frittata. So we had brunch AND lunch all at the same time. Here is hubby making his gravy:

Who is that handsome man in my kitchen?

He had to leave early to go to work so the girls and I had time to visit for a while and when they left I loaded then up with the leftovers. This is a picture of the table before I added the greens, beans and beef patties:

Brunch!

All we had left was a couple of pieces of quiche, some butterbeans and maybe one helping of the frittata. But that is ok. I’d much rather have no food in the house and be able to spend a few hours with my babies. Besides, with just hubby and I home now, we can’t eat that much anyway and since I’m leaving town in a couple of days and hubby has meetings most of the week it would go bad anyway. This way at least someone gets to enjoy it! Hmmmnnnnn…..I wonder what I’ll try to tackle next time? LOL

Oh man, oh man! That looks soooo good.

How GREAT is that, you wanting to make a frittata and the magazine with frittatas in it comes the same day! WOW! Obviously you were meant to make a frittata!

I would say—looking at those pictures that you CAN cook. Made me hungry!

So glad you had a great visit with the girls! The boys always request frittatas if they’re up on the weekends…they call them omelettes, but my omelettes suck! However, my fritattas are fab…you can use anything you have on hand which makes it fairly interesting!

  3. What a lovely brunch! I love frittatas and quiches too. And I love to cook! Alex gets really excited if I watch “Top Chef” because I’ll always attempt something new after I do!

  4. Alaina says:

That looks awesome! I would have loved that brunch! I’ve never had a frittata before, but it looks delicious!

I hadn’t either until I made it. I let everyone else take a bite before I did! LOL Wanted to make sure they didn’t spit it out and run for the bathroom!

  5. Ron says:

Hey Peg….I LOVE quiche more than my own life. And your’s looks TO DIE FOR!!!!

In fact, the whole mean looks awesome!

I’ve never eaten frittata, but now I’m very curious.

BTW, your kitchen looks fabulous. Love the stove!!!

    Hope you’re having a super-duper day!

Thanks Ron. The kitchen is actually what sold us on the house. I thought the house was too small but when hubby saw the kitchen he was like, nope… THIS is the house. He loves his stove too. Notice I call it HIS stove! LOL

  6. Looks delicious! I’ve been getting more adventurous in the kitchen too. Now I am making hummus from scratch at least once a week! So good!

  7. Angelia Sims says:

Wow!! I’m so impressed with you!! That looks fantastic!! I love quiches. That table is mouth watering. Reminds me of our dinner! I miss you gal. 🙂

    • pegbur7 says:

I miss you too! I was just thinking the other day how can I sneak a trip to Texas in? LOL Maybe yall should venture to GA? You’re always welcome!

      • Angelia Sims says:

        I’d like to do that!

And you really should come on a nice weekend in October. Say the 11th? 🙂 Hubby can bake the groom’s cake, that’ll give ya reason huh? 😀

      • pegbur7 says:

I’ll mention that time to hubby and see what he says. I’m not sure when their “no fly”zone is. There are certain times of year they can’t take time off and I always forget when that is until I want him to do something and he says he can’t. It’s an idea I’d like to plan though….

      • pegbur7 says:

        Ummm…. the 11th???

  8. Melissa B. says:

Quiche is one of my favorite meals. And I’ve grown quite fond of the frittata, too. I’m mighty impressed that you got the hubz to help in the kitchen!

    • pegbur7 says:

He usually cooks a lot more than me. He went to culinary school so he feels a lot more at home in the kitchen. In fact, when the kids were still home and I’d cook there words were usually “Oh, God, mom…. you’re not gonna try to cook again are you?” So even though I am a decent cook I didn’t cook much with that kind of encouragement. And since hubby LOVES to, I let him! 😉

  9. Jimmy says:

Looks very impressive Peg, you can’t get any better than good food and time with the kids, I’m glad you got both 🙂

  10. Heather says:

I must admit I have never heard of a frittata, but it sure looks delish! I have never tried a quiche, but have always wanted to. It’s too big a dish for just the me and hubby.

Yes there is a handsome man in your kitchen, but WOW look at that stove!! I am soo jealous on both accounts! My hubby cames in the kitchen just to ask whats to eat. LOL!

Glad you got to spend time with the kiddos.

    • pegbur7 says:

Yeah, about the only time I make anything like that is when the kids come in. Hubby works in a restaurant so it doesn’t make a lot of sense to cook for just me and when we do cook we are so used to cooking for all the kids that it’s hard to cook for just us anymore.

  11. LisaF says:

Forget the quiche. Keep the man! LOL!
